MANHASSET, N.Y. — Intel's campaign to promote WiMAX high-speed wireless picked up important support in recent days as South Korea's KT Corp. said it plans to introduce the service and AT&T said it will test the service in Georgia this fall.
Intel chip sets are expected to be used for both trials, according to published reports. Although the WiMAX Forum still hasn't approved standards for the technology, many firms are developing, testing, and " in some cases " installing pre-WiMAX equipment.
Intel's vision for WiMAX foresees the wide area wireless solution spreading out to cover wider areas than Wi-Fi, the pioneering wireless technology that was also heavily promoted by Intel.
KT is South Korea's leading fixed-line and broadband operator; the first commercial trials of WiMAX are scheduled to get underway next year and KT expects mobile user trials to begin by early 2007.
Meanwhile, AT&T, which is being acquired by SBC Communications, is extending to Georgia its earlier WiMAX trials that were carried out near AT&T headquarters in New Jersey. The company said the trial will be conducted in the Atlanta area.
